Herdade de Cadoucos

Cadoucos Memoriam Reserva 2007 – from Portugal, this wine is monumental! 55% Touriga Nacional, 45% Syrah. Aged 12 months in new French oak barrels and 6 months in the bottle.  Intense purple, with a bouquet of black and red berries, black licorice, fresh herbs, and a hint of chocolate in a superbly structured and elegant finish.

Top International sommelier Zoltan Szabo told me a while back that several of the Cadoucos wines were the most impressive among the more than 500 that he recently judged in competition.  I tasted them while in Portugal and was so impressed, that I arranged a special trip to visit the winery the following year (Spring 2011).

Memoriam is expected to retail for about $29.95 in Canada and in the mid 20’s in the US.  The other wines in the range are Harmony (low $20’s) and aptly named Cadoucos (estimate: $17  in Canada and under $15 in the US). More about the others to come, as soon as we let our euphoria settle enough for our typing paws to stop shaking from excitement.  – The Wine Baron.

Zoltan does the Champagne Sabre at the Wine Baron’s rez. Pre-cursor to him going for the world record.

The ritual dates back to the time of the Huszars. A theatrical way to open a bottle of Sparkling wine. Here he does it on a bottle of Valdivieso sparkling (blanc de blanc). He is planning to break the world record soon!

Vizana Tempranillo 2007: Ribera del Guadiano, Spain. Blockbuster affordable tempranillo crianza…

Minerality, spice, liqueur cherries, blackberries, liquorice with a hint of dark cocoa. Firm tannins, full body, long finish. Did I mention I LIKE this wine? Wow. It matched perfectly with the New York Sirloin at Al Dente this fine Friday eve!
